Hi, my name is Shaina-Ashley. I am enrolled in the Springboard to a DCS program at Ahuntsic College. I am currently working on completing the prerequisites for the dental hygiene program, which I plan to enter in the upcoming fall semester. Here a glossary of 20 words with punctuation that will help you to have a better understanding on dentistry terms.

Abrasion
Noun
Tooth wear caused by improper brushing or excessively forceful use of toothpicks or floss.
Example: This plaque is subject to frequent abrasion by the tongue and by the cheeks.

Noun
A chemical agent that can be applied to living tissue to destroy germs.
Example: Patients with compromised immune systems must be treated in aseptic environments.

Apex
Noun
The tip of the roof of a tooth.
Example: The mouth, with its jaws, forms a conical outgrowth which projects backwards, so that its apex lies beneath the prothorax.

Noun
A cosmetic procedure that uses a tooth colored composite resin material to enhance your smile.

Noun
A dental tool that sometimes called appliance, that help correct problems with your teeth, like crowding, crooked teeth, or teeth that are not aligned.

Tooth decay or cavities the breakdown of teeth due to acids produced by bacteria.

Noun
A layer of material that lies immediately underneath the enamel of the tooth.
Example: That allows bacteria and acids to dig into your dentin, the next, softer layer of your teeth.

the hard, mineralized material that covers the outside portion of the tooth that lies above the gum line (the crown).
Example: The tea set is decorated with enamel.

Flossing
Noun
A thread-like material used to clean between the contact areas of teeth; part of a good daily oral hygiene plan.
Example: Frank is watching one of his news programs and flossing his teeth.

General dentist
Noun
The primary care dental provider. This dentist diagnoses, treats, and manages overall oral health care needs, including gum care, root canals, fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, preventive education, and treating diseases of the mouth.
Example: He goes to the dentist's for a check-up every six months.

Gingiva
Noun
The soft tissue that surrounds the base of the teeth; the pink tissue around the teeth.
Example: This leaves a small space between the gingiva and tooth which can collect bacteria and plaque.

Noun
A person who is trained and licensed to clean teeth, take dental x-rays, and provide related dental services and care, usually under the supervision of a dentist.
Example: Maybe he was sitting in the diner with the dental hygienist.

Hypersensitivity
Noun
A sharp, sudden painful reaction in teeth when exposed to hot, cold, sweet, sour, salty, chemical, or mechanical stimuli.
Example: People who are hypersensitive to the chemical may have violent reactions even to small amounts.

Occlusion
Noun
The normal spatial relation of the teeth when the jaws are closed.

Orthodontist
Noun
A dentist trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat teeth and jaw irregularities. They correct existing conditions and are trained to identify problems that may develop in the future.
Example: And that’s when I remember that I was supposed to meet Dad downstairs at five o’clock to go to the orthodontist.

Plaque
Noun
A colorless, sticky film composed of undigested food particles mixed with saliva and bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. Plaque left alone eventually turns in to tartar or calculus and is the main factor in causing dental caries and periodontal disease.
Example: Brushing your teeth prevents the buildup of plaque.
